If you're looking for a deeper dive into Psalm 34, this reflection explores what it means to seek the Lord, experience His goodness, and let His presence shape the way we live. You'll also find practical ways to apply Psalm 34 to your everyday life, prayer journal prompts, and a creative Bible journaling tutorial to help you spend time in God's Word.
Have you ever noticed how spending time with someone can change the way you feel?
A conversation with a dear friend can lift your spirits. A few quiet moments can help you see things differently. Time spent with someone who encourages you can change the way you approach the rest of your day.
I think something similar happens when we spend time with Jesus.
We may come to Him feeling weary, distracted, or overwhelmed by everything waiting for us. But as we sit with His Word, remember His goodness, and invite Him into our hearts, something begins to shift.
We may not even realize it at first.
But we begin to see things differently. We respond with a little more grace. We carry His peace into conversations and circumstances that might otherwise have unsettled us.
Psalm 34 gives us this beautiful reminder:
It's a simple invitation.
Look to Him.
And let His goodness change the way you show up in the world.

Psalm 34 is a beautiful psalm of praise that reminds us of God's goodness, faithfulness, and care for His people.
David begins with a declaration:
“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
He invites others to join him in magnifying the Lord, remembers how God answered him when he sought Him, and encourages his readers to experience God's goodness for themselves:
“O taste and see that the Lord is good.”
As the Psalm continues, David reminds us that the Lord hears the cries of His people, draws near to the brokenhearted, and offers refuge to those who trust in Him.
And right in the middle of these beautiful promises, we find verse 5:
“Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed.”
These words remind us that our relationship with God isn't meant to be something we keep tucked away in a quiet corner of our lives.
As we seek Him, remember His goodness, and learn to walk in His ways, His work in our hearts begins to influence how we live.
Time spent with Jesus doesn't stop when our quiet time ends. It goes with us into the rest of our day.
“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
David doesn't say that he will praise the Lord only when life is going well. He says he will bless the Lord at all times.
That doesn't mean we have to feel joyful every moment or pretend that difficult circumstances don't affect us. As we saw in Psalm 13, Scripture gives us room to bring our honest struggles before God.
But even in difficult seasons, we can continue to remember who He is.
We can praise Him for His faithfulness when we're waiting for an answer. We can thank Him for His presence when we don't understand what's happening. We can turn to His Word when our thoughts are pulling us in a dozen different directions.
Praise helps us remember that God is still God, even when our circumstances are uncertain.
And the more we practice turning our attention toward Him, the more naturally we can begin to carry that perspective into everyday life.
I want to become someone whose first response isn't always frustration or worry, but a heart that remembers to turn toward the Lord. Not perfectly, of course. There will always be moments when I need to pause, take a breath, and redirect my thoughts.
But I can keep coming back to Him.
One prayer at a time. One verse at a time. One ordinary moment at a time.
“Look to him, and be radiant.”
This is the verse that has stayed with me as I've been reflecting on Psalm 34.
I think we sometimes underestimate the difference that time with Jesus makes in our lives.
We might imagine that making an impact means doing something big or accomplishing something everyone can see. But what if some of the most meaningful ways we reflect God's love happen in the ordinary moments of our days?
What if it's the patience we show when a conversation becomes difficult?
The kindness we offer to someone who is having a hard day?
The decision to respond with grace instead of joining in when everyone around us is complaining?
These things may seem small, but they matter.
When we spend time with the Lord and allow His Word to shape our hearts, we begin to see opportunities to love people differently.
We may not always notice the difference ourselves. We may never know how a kind word encouraged someone or how a peaceful response changed the atmosphere of a conversation.
But we can continue to show up with love.
This is one reason I believe our quiet time matters so much. It's not about checking a box or completing a Bible study so we can move on with our day.
It's about drawing near to Jesus and allowing Him to work in us.
We spend time with Him so we can carry His love into the world around us.
The next time you sit down with your Bible or prayer journal, consider asking not only, “Lord, what do You want to show me today?” but also, “How can I carry what I learn here into the way I treat others?”
You may be surprised by the opportunities He gives you.
One thing I love about this verse is that it reminds us to keep looking to the Lord, regardless of what's happening around us.
Think about how easy it is to be influenced by the atmosphere of a room.
If everyone around us is frustrated, we can quickly find ourselves complaining too. If conversations become negative, it can be tempting to add our own frustrations to the mix.
Before we know it, we've adopted the very outlook we wish we could change.
But we don't have to respond to every situation in the same way everyone else does.
We can pause and ask God to help us see things differently.
We can choose kindness when it's easier to be critical. We can speak words that encourage rather than tear down. We can seek peace instead of adding to the tension.
This doesn't mean ignoring genuine problems or avoiding difficult conversations. Sometimes love requires honesty, boundaries, or a willingness to address something that needs to change.
But we can approach those moments with a heart that is being shaped by Jesus.
We don't have to wait until everyone around us changes before we begin living differently.
We can keep looking to Him. We can keep asking Him to fill us with His wisdom, peace, and love. And we can keep reflecting His goodness in the places He has already put us.
You don't have to do something extraordinary to shine God's love. You can begin right where you are.
As I worked on the pages of our Psalms of Praise journal, I kept coming back to the idea of being radiant because we look to the Lord.
I think about all the ordinary places where we spend our days. Our homes. Our workplaces. Our conversations with family and friends. The errands, responsibilities, and little interruptions that fill our schedules.
It's easy to think that the meaningful part of our time with God happens only when we're sitting quietly with our Bibles open.
But I want to remember that those moments are preparing my heart for everything that comes afterward.
When I slow down enough to listen to His Word, I have an opportunity to let Him correct my perspective, soften my heart, and remind me of what matters most.
Then I get to carry those truths with me.
I may not always feel radiant. I may still have difficult days, lose my patience, or need to ask for forgiveness. Growing in faith doesn't mean we suddenly respond perfectly to every situation.
It means we keep returning to the Lord and allowing Him to shape us.
I want the people around me to experience more of His kindness because I've spent time with Him. I want my words to bring encouragement, my responses to reflect grace, and my presence to offer a little more peace.
And I want to remember that this kind of growth begins in the quiet, ordinary moments when I choose to look to Jesus.
This week, try connecting your quiet time with one small way you can reflect God's love to someone else.
Here's a simple practice to try:
You don't need to do something big or impressive.
Sometimes the most meaningful changes happen in the smallest moments, when we choose to respond in a way that reflects the heart of Jesus.
Let your time with Him shape the way you move through your day.
Use these prompts to spend a little more time reflecting on Psalm 34. You can write your responses in your prayer journal, create a Scripture page, or simply sit with one question during your quiet time.
Don't feel as though you need to answer every question at once. Choose one that resonates with you and give yourself permission to slow down and reflect.
The goal isn't to fill every page of your journal. It's to make room to meet with the Lord and carry His truth into your everyday life.
If you'd like to study Scripture and create a journal alongside me, I'd love for you to join the Psalms of Praise series!
In this eight-part YouTube series, we're making a faith-based junk journal from start to finish while reflecting on Psalms that invite us to praise the Lord and draw closer to Him.
In this third video, we continue preparing the journal pages before binding everything into the cover. We add stitching, create layered pockets, and incorporate little details like fabric ruffles, lace, and journaling cards.
I love how these small details turn ordinary pieces of paper into a journal that feels personal and meaningful. And just like our time in Scripture, the process doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful.
You can use printable papers, vintage book pages, scraps of fabric, or whatever you already have on hand. Let the process be simple, creative, and an opportunity to slow down with the Lord.
